If you’ve been following skincare and aesthetic medicine recently, you may have heard about PDRN, polynucleotides and exosomes. They are all generating a lot of interest, but they are not simply different names for the same thing.
At Blackabey’s, we are always interested in treatments that focus on skin health and skin quality, which is why we are introducing PDRN as an addition to our medical microneedling treatments.
What is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. Put simply, it is made up of DNA-derived fragments and has been investigated for its potential role in tissue repair and skin regeneration.
PDRN and polynucleotides are closely related, but they are not identical. They differ in their molecular characteristics and how they are formulated and used in aesthetic medicine. Research into both is developing, with clinical studies investigating their potential applications in skin rejuvenation and tissue repair.
Why combine PDRN with microneedling?
Medical microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. This is already an established treatment approach for improving the appearance and quality of the skin.
When we combine medical microneedling with a PDRN-containing formulation, the microchannels provide a route for the topical formulation to be delivered into the skin during treatment, rather than simply remaining on the surface.
There is emerging research specifically looking at PDRN alongside microneedling, including studies investigating outcomes such as skin texture, wrinkles and pigmentation. However, this is still an evolving area of aesthetic medicine and larger, higher-quality studies are needed.
What about exosomes?
Our new formulation is Bioreg Exosomes by My Skin Chemistry, which combines PDRN with exosomes.
Exosomes are another area attracting considerable interest within regenerative aesthetics. Research is exploring their potential applications alongside procedures such as microneedling, including for skin ageing, pigmentation, scarring and overall skin quality. However, the evidence is still developing and more research is needed to establish long-term safety and effectiveness.
Who might PDRN microneedling suit?
At Blackabey’s, we are particularly interested in using this approach for clients whose skin is looking:
- Dull or tired
- Dehydrated
- Uneven in appearance
- Lacking radiance
- In need of an overall skin-quality boost
It may also appeal to clients who like the concept of polynucleotide-style skin treatments but don’t want multiple injections across the face.
PDRN microneedling isn’t about changing your facial structure. It is about taking a skin-first approach and incorporating another option into a personalised treatment plan.
