How to avoid the overfilled look?

Whether you are an a-list celebrity or the normal person on the street, we are all susceptible to an overfilled appearance; especially when guided by non medical professionals and influenced by those making decisions from a financial perspective rather than patient welfare.

The images of an overfilled, frozen appearance are everywhere in the news and social media. This gives the aesthetic industry a bad name as well as regularly used products such as botulinum toxin (also known as Botox) and dermal filler. However, these products are not the bad guys in these scenarios. A tool is only as good as the person using them. If used incorrectly or inappropriately the results can be devastating.

It is difficult to go through in detail all the different causes for overfilling however there are important tips to avoid this result.

TIP 1

Rome was not built in a day and neither was your skin transformaton. It takes patience, confidence in your medical professional and a holistic approach to your skincare.

It can be tempting to have multiple treatments straight away including multiple mls of dermal filler and high doses of botulinum toxin.

A transformation that provides natural results takes time. Do not feel pressurised to have multiple treatments…take is slow and start with small volumes and wait to see the results. You can always have more if needed once the initial swelling from dermal filler has settled and your medical professional has reassessed you.

During your consultation you should have a grace period explained to you to change your mind and also be given the opportunity to go away and think about all your treatment options prior to going ahead. A clinic that offers a free consultation ONLY if you book a treatment same day is a red flag and I strongly advise you review the terms and conditions of the clinic you are interested in prior to booking.

TIP 2

Go to a medical professional who is able to tell you their background in the aesthetic industry and where they were trained. Reputable training academies will often only work with medical professionals and demand that their students undergo rigorous training in multiple treatments and how to examine and assess patients and take into account their anatomy and any underlying conditions.

It is important that you have a full consultation and examination prior to having any treatments in order to ensure optimum results that are natural in appearance. A lot of professionals will not publicise their results on social media. This is to respect client privacy and also prevent patients from using other patient results to pick and choose treatments that may not always be suitable for all.

However, professionals do keep testimonials from patients and also photographic evidence of results that they keep privately and are able to show you in a private consultation as long as patient’s have provided permission. Do not be afraid to ask your medical professional for examples of treatments you are considering in order to see potential results.

TIP 3

Ask your medical professional about the products they use in their clinic. They should have more than one type of filler available and be able to demonstrate which type of filler is best for different results in different areas of the face.

The use of a “one size fits all “ dermal filler is a red flag for multiple reasons. It can mean that the practitioner you are seeing lacks the knowledge to tailor your treatment to your needs and does not understand why different formulations of fillers are used to treat different concerns. This is one of the most common causes of an overfilled appearance that I personally see in the clinic.
